Mountains may be cradles of evolution

Growing mountains may give rise to new species — and not simply provide a refuge to species whose traditional habitats have been lost, US scientists suggest.
"The major times of [species] diversification directly coincide with times of large tectonic events," says Catherine Badgley, a palaeontologist at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, who presented the findings this week at the annual meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology in Bristol, UK.
Mountainous regions are known to harbour higher levels of species richness than other areas. The reason, ecologists argue, is because mountains offer many different habitats in a relatively small geographical area. For example, whereas ten square kilometres of plains offer just one habitat, the same area of mountain landscape can provide sloping meadows, peaks and cliffs, all with different temperatures, rainfall and vegetation.
The long-standing view among ecologists has been that mountainous areas act as refuges for species that have been driven out of their normal habitat by difficult environmental conditions. A typical example could be a species dwelling in plains near the base of mountains — a change in conditions on the plains might mean that mountain areas begin to suit the needs of the species better, causing it to migrate.

"Mountains have always been considered the places for species to make their last stands because they offer such diverse terrain," notes Russell Graham, a palaeoecologist at Pennsylvania State University in University Park.
Curious about the mechanisms responsible for making mountains so rich in diversity, Badgley and her collaborator John Finarelli, also at the University of Michigan, studied mountain and lowland speciation rates and species richness using the fossil record of the Rocky Mountains and the Great Plains in North America. The fossils they inspected date to the Miocene period, which began around 23 million years ago and ended about 5 million years ago. They found that there were bursts of speciation that took place only in the mountains during times of tectonic activity. During all other times, they discovered that speciation rates in the two regions were moderate and similar.
Isolating incident
Although the highly varied terrain of mountains helps to explain why so many different species can live there, the question of where the species richness actually comes from has never been addressed, explains Badgely. She and Finarelli now propose that as mountains are lifted up by the tectonic processes of the Earth's crust, mountain-dwelling species become isolated from other members of the same species living at lower altitudes. This isolation ultimately leads to the two groups breaking apart to form individual species.

"We had never thought of mountains as the birthplaces of species before," says Graham.
However, mountains might not be the only areas where speciation is taking place, explains Elizabeth Hadly, a palaeoecologist at Stanford University in California. It is also possible for mountains to have risen up from plains where there were once just, say, 10 species, she explains. The division created by the newly formed mountains could result in 20 unique species in the plains — 10 on either side of the mountains. Some of these species may ultimately find their way into the mountains to contribute to the increased diversity that is observed following tectonic activity. Indeed, adds Hadly, it is difficult to tell whether the evolution of new species happens in the plains, in the mountains, or both.

(BEIJING, August 16) -- World No. 3 Novak Djokovic of Serbia won the second medal of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games for Serbia with a 6-3, 7-6(4) win over James Blake of the United States at the Olympic Green Tennis Center on Saturday, August 16.

Djokovic, the first medalist to be decided at the Tennis venue, joins compatriot Milorad Cavic, who was just edged out of the gold medal in the 100m butterfly by Michael Phelps of the United States earlier in the day, as a Serbian medal winner at these Olympic Games.

Playing in his first Olympics, Djokovic is the first player from his NOC to win a medal in Tennis.

In celebration, Djokovic went down on his knees, tore off his shirt and threw it to fans in the crowd, and proudly held up the Serbian flag.

Djokovic was on top of Blake from the outset, serving confidently enough to avoid having his serve broken during the 76-minute match, offering his opponent only one service break opportunity in the second set.

The match was dominated by unforced errors, with Blake putting up 35 and Djokovic racking in 36.

Blake surrendered his serve in the fourth game of the first set to lose momentum in the match early on.

The second set stayed on course until the tiebreaker where Djokovic was able to take control when the American faltered.

At 4-4, an out of position Blake was tripped up on a backhand, which gave Djokovic two chances to serve out the match with a 5-4 lead. Blake made two backhand errors on the final two points, resulting in the bronze medal being draped around the Serbian's neck.

(BEIJING, August 16) -- Jamaican Usain Bolt has won the Men's 100m Final at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in a world record time of 9.69 seconds.

Silver medalist Richard Thompson of Trinidad and Tobago ran a time of 9.89 seconds, leaving American Walter Dix at 9.91 seconds to take the bronze.

Bolt broke his own world record of 9.72 seconds, which he set in June this year. The Olympic record stood at 9.84 seconds, set by Donovan Bailey at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.

Bolt came from relative obscurity to worldwide attention in the 100m at a Grand Prix event on Long Island, New York, in late May, after demolishing the field and breaking the world record in a time of 9.72 seconds, a stunning result for anyone, let alone a runner who had been seen as a 200m specialist.

The swimming legend who held the record for most gold medals in a single Olympics for 36 years now has company after fellow American Michael Phelps captured the men's 100-metre butterfly by the narrowest of margins on Saturday in Beijing.

Charging from behind over the final metres, Phelps extended his six-foot-four frame to trip the timer just 1-100th of a second ahead of Serbia's Milorad Cavic.

The thrilling victory gave Phelps, 23, his seventh title of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, matching the storied standard set by Spitz in 1972 in Munich.

Phelps now has 13 career Olympic golds as he continues to put space between himself and the old record of nine set by Spitz and three others.

Adlington touched in 8 minutes, 14.10 seconds Saturday, breaking the oldest record in swimming of 8:16.22 set by the American in Tokyo on Aug. 20, 1989. Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry defended her Olympic title in the women's 200-meter backstroke and set a world record. And 41-year-old Dara Torres was the fastest qualifier in the women's 50 freestyle. She'll have the middle lane for the final Sunday morning.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: After three consecutive blowouts, it took a half for the U.S. team to get going and beat Spain 93-55. Tina Thompson scored nine of her 17 points during the decisive third quarter run and Lisa Leslie added 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Americans had won their first three games by an average of 47 points, putting the game away by halftime in all the victories. On Friday, they led by just five at halftime, 39-34, and for the game they committed 19 turnovers.

BOXING: Raynell Williams, a serious American medal contender, lost Friday night, saying he was wronged by subjective calls. Williams fell behind early and never caught up to France's Khedafi Djelkhir.

CYCLING: It was a big day for Britain, with the British beating France for the gold in men's team sprint and Bradley Wiggins setting an Olympic record in qualifying for the 4,000-meter individual pursuit. American Taylor Phinney -- the 18-year-old son of 1984 gold medalist Connie Carpenter-Phinney and '84 bronze medalist Davis Phinney -- advanced in the pursuit race with his parents watching from the front row. "It is just another race and I like to think of it that way," Taylor Phinney said. "But it's also way bigger than I thought it would be."

BASEBALL: Terry Tiffee doubled in the go-ahead run in the seventh, Brian Barden homered and tied the score with his seventh-inning double and the U.S. rallied from a four-run deficit to beat Canada 5-4 Saturday. Brian Duensing retired 10 of the final 11 batters for the win as the Americans turned a one-run result in their favor for a change. They lost their opener 8-7 to South Korea and then a demoralizing 5-4, 11-inning defeat to defending champion Cuba on Friday. The film opens showing Ravi teja in his usual style as a mass hero. But afterwards gets into a shade of a family entertainer with lots of sentiment and hi drama is induced into it. Ravi Teja is seen as a man with errands in this film. The natural vigor and exuberance of Ravi Teja gets omitted in this film to a large extent. The director brings in his wits to carve this subject into a strict family entertainer with some light Charisma of Anushka. Some sequences depict the shades of Ravi Teja’s previous hit ‘Badra’

Story

Chanti (Ravi teja) grows up in the house of Peddanna (Krishna), as his mother dies in his childhood. His father Chandramohan is like a patron to the family and so Ravi teja and his father Chandramohan worship Superstar Krishna as the godfather of their lives.

Peddanna (Superstar Krishna) is a rich and well famed proprietor of a construction firm RK Builders. He is well settled in the business and earns wealth and name from the society.

He always helps the people who are in need and always serves them financially or materialistically. This good deed in him makes Pradeep Rawat his family enemy. He hates Peddanna’s (Krishna) good deeds and always finds ways to suppress him.

The reason for Pradeep Rawat’s hatred towards Peddanna (Krishna) is due to a well explained flash back. Pradeep Rawat during his young Days Rapes a young girl in a village. As a result Krishna as the head of the village gives him a punishment to vacate the village. From that day the hatred seed grows in the heart of Pradeep Rawat and Peddanna (Krishna) is always made the target to be suppressed.

Meanwhile, Chanti loves his Peddanna (Krishna) very much and obeys his each and every word and saying. More than his father Chanti respects Peddanna in such a way that he lives for him and also dies for him.

Peddanna’s family is always a target to Pradeep Rawat’s evil deeds. The troubles are projected in all ways towards Peddanna, but the cleverly aged person evades each one carefully.

Due to an unfortunate incident, Ravi teja is misunderstood by the whole family and his father Chandramohan drives him away from the family and the home. Incidentally, Bhanumathi (Anushka) enters Chanti’s life in a railway station. She gets attracted to the innocence and dynamism of Ravi Teja and so falls in love with him.

Meanwhile, Ravi teja takes the total responsibility of Peddanna and his family on his shoulders. He shields them from the evil plots of Pradeep Rawat and his goons. However, he losses his father Chandramohan in this process. But Chandramohan realizes before dying that his son is now a well matured, wise male who can handle precarious situations very well. He gets satisfied and looses his soul.

The rest of the story is about the plots of Pradeep Rawat against Peddanna and how Chanti saves the lives of Peddanna and his family. All ends happily in the end.

Performances

Superstar Krishna is the highlight in this movie. His dynamic appearance as the village head makes the audience happy. With a well weaved role, Krishna exhilarates in the lengthy Character. The matured performance of Krishna and his well matched impeccable acting skills are truly a highlight in this movie.

Ravi Teja, attracts the masses in the first half of then movie. But due to the twits and turns the second half role of his, becomes serious and classy. However, his usual masala romance with Anushka is well maintained through out the film. The pair looks comfortable on screen and some romantic scenes and rain songs are mid blowing.

Anushka has turned into a sizzling hottie in this film. The extra flab around her wait has been drained out and so the seductive actress looks sexy in every frame. Especially her rain song wearing a bikini sized costume will definitely heat the pants of her male fans.

Chandramohan has lived up his role in style and has justified to his character by his impeccable acting.

The comedy track is lead by Brahmanandham and Co. The scene in which Brahmanandham breaks the coconut is hilarious. Adding to this Sunil who plays the role of a best friend to the hero supports the comedy track well.

Coming to the music part, the tunes are not so catchy. But the choreography is worth mentioning. They are well filmed in the camera and the dance steps and the actress costumes add the fizz to the songs.

On the whole the director Uday Shanker brings in comedy, sentiment, romance and action under one roof and also succeeds in doing so to a large extent. The story of the film replicates the films which released in the seventies genre.

The film will be a treat for Ravi Teja’s fans and since the weekend is packed with holidays the movie may gets some investments. It is a movie which can run for 50 days. And if the superstar and Ravi teja Fans determine, then it may cross the 100 day barrier.

Windows XP and Windows Vista users can grab a free power management application, made available courtesy of Microsoft and Verdiem. According to the Redmond giant, the energy monitoring program is designed to integrate seamlessly with XP Service pack 2 and Windows Vista RTM. Microsoft has said nothing about compatibility with XP SP3 or Vista SP1. However, the proverbial ball is now in the users' court with the software giant challenging no less than 10 million users, approximately 1% of the entire Windows install base to download and install the solution in the coming year.

"Microsoft’s CES Rob Bernard, Verdiem’s CEO Kevin Klustner, and the Climate Savers Computing Initiative’s President Lorie Wigle announced the launch of Verdiem's Edison, a power management application offered free to PC users around the world! A video recording of the announcement is now available on-line. The video provides a demo of the software and a great overview on the importance of power management in computing," stated Nick MacKechnie, Senior Technical Account Manager at Microsoft New Zealand.

Edison will work in accordance with the end users' work schedules, and as such will optimize the Windows operating system's energy consumption in accordance with the tasks being performed. In addition to configuring power schemes, Edison will also provide information on the savings in terms of CO2, kWh and money for the machines that are energy efficient.

"Verdiem’s Edison is a free energy-monitoring application for eco-conscious consumers. You can use it to more actively control your PC’s energy consumption - and subsequently your household’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions," reads a fragment of the tool's description. "Made for Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Vista PC users, Verdiem’s Edison enhances the operating systems’ existing power settings with increased overall energy savings and provides a consumer-friendly user interface that makes it easy to set up and manage."

Abhinav Bindra wins 10m air rifle gold at Beijing Olympics

Abhinav Bindra won the gold medal in men's 10 metre air rifle event of the shooting competition at Beijing Olympics on Monday morning.

The gold medal is India's first since 1980, when the hockey team emerged triumphant in Moscow.

Qinan Zhu of China scored 699.7 for second place while Finn Henri Hakkinen faltered on a final shot and finished third with a total of 699.4.

Earlier, Bindra ended the poor run of Indian shooters at the Olympics by qualifying for the men's 10 metres air rifle event final.

However, Gagan Narang failed to make the final cut in the same event as he finished ninth with a score of 595/600. Narang shot a series of 97, 100, 100, 100, 98, 100.

Bindra, a Khel Ratna winner, finished the qualifying event joint-fourth with Romania's George Alin Moldoveanu in the qualification round. The duo had a score of 596/600.

The bespectacled India shooter's scoring sequence was 100, 99, 100, 98, 100 and 99.

Meanwhile, Finland's Henri Hakkinen qualified first for the event with a score of 598/600 after shooting a series of 100, 100, 99, 100, 100 and 99.

China's Qinan Zhu was a point adrift of Hakkinen with a series of 100, 100, 100, 100, 99 and 98.

Colombo: India's first innings slide continued on day one of the crucial third Test on Friday. It could not have been easy for the skipper Anil Kumble to watch either.

Kumble had no hesitation in deciding to bat first at P Sara Oval, but the way his batsmen handed the job was far from impressive.

As it is, Tendulkar's quest to beat Brian Lara's record as the leading run-scorer at Test level still eludes the Mumbai batsman.

Tendulkar asked for the referral after Mark Benson gave him out and the review indicated the ball would have carried on hitting the middle and leg stumps. Tendulkar's six runs in this innings means that he has failed to make an impression so far this series and requires another 90 runs to go ahead of Lara.

But Prasad, presented with his cap before the Test started at the refurbished venue, bowled a tight an accurate off-stump line that had the batsmen often in trouble, although his dismissal of Virender Sehwag was a tad fortunate.

The film marks the return of the unique and lovable pair of Rahul Bose and Mallika Sherawat (after the hit PYAAR KE SIDE EFFECTS) and they have the support of two of the industry's best actors, Paresh Rawal and Kay Kay Menon. A VENUS production, MAAN GAYE MUGHALL-E-AZAM is directed by Sanjay Chhel who has earlier made KHOOBSURAT and KYA DIL NE KAHAA. With music by Anu Malik , the lyrics are penned by writer/director sanjay Chhel.

Synopsis:

It's Mission...Mohabbat...Madness...

MAAN GAYE MUGHALL-E-AZAM is a Mad Contemporary Comedy about how a small town Drama Company gets involved in a deadly mission to save the country Circa 1993 - The country was burning due to the Babri structure demolition and communal riots. A small town like St. Louis near Goa, where police, CBI and RAW officers were put on high alert due to illegal activities like Rdx and Arms landing at the coastal area !! Set up in the same town is Kalakar Theatre Company, a Theatre group of self indulged dreamy actors who are always left with no choice but to perform the same age old period play 'Mughall-E-Azam' every time. One fine day, they come to know that, an underworld don is planning a severe bomb blast in the country. A funny and thrilling roller-coaster ride begins when the entire Drama Company designs 'A deadly game plan' and gets into the act to save the entire city from these blasts. Performing multiple roles in disguise, the characters make you go crazy and eventually, save the entire nation from the big bomb blast in a hilarious slapstick climax. It's a story of losers becoming winners...'Actors' becoming 'Heroes'... A comedy which thinks and winks!!

Character Sketch:

1) Mallika Sherawat - Queen of glamour Shabnam
A sexy, smart, naughty actress who has big dreams. She feels that the Bollywood is awaiting her and on the other hand, she is waiting for a 'young lover' in her boring married life. A fuuny 'Anarkali' of 'Mission Mughall-E-Azam', she can seduce the entire country. And this quality of hers in the end helps save the country as well. She is the heart of this film.

2) Rahul Bose - Prince of romance Arjun
A dashing secret agent who is secretly in love with Shabnam. He has a serious agenda in his mind and sweet love plan in his heart. He is the one who motivates the theatre group for something bigger than just a few claps and eventually traps them in a deadly game. He is a mind of this film.

3) Paresh Rawal - Shahenshah of comedy Uday Shankar Mazumdar
Uday Shankar is a possessive husband who is excessively obsessed about his acting. He doesn't act, but overacts. He plays Akbar like Othello, and Othello like Hanuman! He thinks that he is a living legend even though the audience almost goes dead due to his overacting. An innocently committed actor and a born loser, in the end, he risks his life to perform a challenging role! He is the soul of this film.

4) Kay Kay Menon - Ace of andaaz Haldi Hassan
Stylish, romantic, Urdu gazal singer always ready to fall in love with each of his female fans. He speaks romance, sings romance, he lives romance. But no one understands his classic urdu lingo and also his mysterious mind.
